Greetings.

I, Lord Snot, will now address you, my Livejournal public, on recent events from my perspective. Anyone who wishes to comment here may do so, free of charge! Seriously, I invite anyone to comment in my journal, even the infamous Anonymous.

In case you missed it, here is the back story:

A post was made in cf_debate called Let's Talk About Freetard. It was interesting and reasonable and included some valid points:

1) Not all Childfree are frothing at the mouth baby-haters.
2) Just because not all Childfree are frothing at the mouth baby-haters does not mean that none are.
3) Not everyone at Stupid_free is not out to "get" the childfree.
4) Just because not everyone at Stupid_free is out to "get" the childfree does not mean that nobody is.
5) Anyone who says that CF rant language either is only used towards bad parents or misbehaving child or that it stays inside CF communities will be laughed at.
6) Both sides troll the other's communities. Nobody is innocent.

Life continued without incident until the old standby argument of "stupid_free totally trolls CF!" came up. This is an old, tired, seriously lame MEME debate that has been proven inaccurate over and over. Don't believe me? Just look at our tags page. Childfree communities are snarked. Parenting communities are snarked. Knitting communities are snarked. ALL communities with stupid posts are snarked. stupid_free is an equal opportunity offender. We point at everyone. Don't like what we do? That's okay, don't join. But don't try to paint yourself into a corner of victimization because a party line you personally subscribe to was posted to stupid_free.

SIDE NOTE:Here's a once and for all answer about why we're called stupid_free. We thought it was funny that communities with "Child Free" in their titles talked about children and parenting non-stop. We called our community Stupid FREE because we talk about stupid non-stop. It's a funny, but it doesn't mean we think the CF opinion is bad or wrong or stupid. Is that clear to everyone? Okay.

Here's the thread where the banning took place. Some people were insisting that stupid_free is a CF hating zone. Members chimed in to disagree. It's all a matter of opinion, I guess and what colour glasses you wear while you view it, until the mod of the community (in this case, commanderd) takes sides and says yes, in fact, S_F is grudgewanky against the CF, namely her.

We Snots are members of the community, not trolls - but MEMBERS, for years. As members, we defended ourselves. We pointed out that if there was a grudge against The Commander specifically, it wouldn't need to have anything to do with her CF status. It would have to do with her specifically pre-banning us from her communities based on nothing but our existence, and calling us "a bunch of cunts". Essentially, the bias started early, and it was started by her.

Long and the short, we got banned, and in a most dramatic fashion:

Since you have proven unable to contribute constructively to any debate on this comm, and instead done your best to incite drama, the mods have decided unanimously that we'd be better off without you here.

A. It was not unanimous.

B. We've contributed constructively in numerous posts.

C. We weren't there to incite drama, we were there to clear up facts.

D. commanderd has her own prejudices.

E. Where are the links to this drama inciting? If I was doing MY BEST at it, it shouldn't be too hard to find, right? I'm good at stuff like that!

So I posted about this to sf_drama.

And sayonara_snot posted about it in stupid_free.

I dug up a bunch of links to threads in cf_debate where I was behaving like any other member. But people still keep saying that we've been nothing but trouble. "The Snots are a recurrent problem, like HERPES!" and "They get warned every few months!" and "They're only ever here to stir up drama!"

But where are the links?? If this happened so often, and so clearly, why is it that no one can find any evidence of it? It didn't take me long to find my comments in threads in the comm, but all 7 mods are still having trouble?

In all honesty, I think I can remember one time I got finger-wagged by commanderd somewhere, maybe in cf_debate. I don't even remember what it was about, maybe just being argumentative with another member and she told us to cut it out. This memory is extremely vague because I don't think it was a real issue. And whatever was said to me, I dropped it like I was told. Maybe it was even in a dream.

So why all the hoopla? Well, the point was made best here by bluegrasskitty:

its about being lied about and having their rep smeared even more than it is already.

cause see, this is how it starts. some mod somewhere bans somebody on the grounds that they've ALWAYS trolled when they haven't. then those users get a rep as trolls and are thereafter viewed as such, even when they're not. we're talking about principles and character here.

Looky, here it is actually happening:

I'd be more inclined to believe them if they hadn't already managed to get themselves banned from childfree and cf_hardcore for trolling AND named their community stupid_free.

The revisionist history at work! Someone would be more inclined to believe us if not for this other stuff...nevermind that the other stuff never actually happened!

Why do we get banned from communities? Because everyone else calls us trolls, so it must be true!

Why did we make a big stink about it? Well, because we run a snark and drama community, we're just doing our job.

If commanderd admitted that she jumped the gun and got emotional, this whole thing would be over. But for her and a few others to still, days later, insist that we were properly banned for rules violations -- over and over and over we violated these rules! -- when it didn't actually happen? That's unfair and she should admit it.

Instead she's digging in her heels and martyring herself at the same time by offering to step down as mod. For someone who claims to want her comm to run drama-free, that's hilarious irony.

commanderd, just admit that you banned based on emotion. Stop insisting there were multiple warnings when there were not. Tell us you just didn't want us there, and that's fine. As you point out, you OWN that community. You have every right to remove us. But don't call it a unanimous decision (then back peddle and say "unanimous of all the mods online at that moment") because it wasn't. Don't say we had our final warning because we didn't. Don't say we were breaking rules when we were just defending ourselves (which you do in our comm all the time and no one kicks you out, no matter how dramatically you might do it. Need links? No problem, I think you're getting your own tag). Don't further the anti-S_F agenda by piling on a bunch of insults and nonsense based on opinion, not fact.

In short, just come clean and we can all bury the hatchet. The funniest part of this is that in reading back through threads I was involved in in cf_debate, I found several places where you and I were actually agreeing with each other. See that? Cats and dogs living together - real Wrath of God type stuff.

HOW THE FUCK DOES THE LITTLE CLICKY BOX KEEP GETTING CLICKED? I've gone in 50 times and clicked OFF because I do NOT WANT (insert proper macro here), let me repeat, DO NOT WANT to be notified by email, telephone, text message, or smoke signal when someone requests membership to the community I maintain. All day, every day people request membership. I don't need to be notified. We Snots go right to the community management page and approve members, and this is a daily chore that we are well aware of. Whenever we get lazy, we're punished by a lengthy queue that takes hours to sort out. I don't need to be notified. I don't need to be notified. Please stop notifying me. For the love of GOD PLEASE STOP notifying me.

sayonara_snot and I spent most of yesterday loving up on stupid_free. It was real cute: side by side on computers, her sifting through 300+ new membership requests while I lj-seeked to figure out what we've missed in the past week when life made us too busy. Here are some things that presented:

We're at 4700+ members! Wow. Statement expressing intention of world domination. Gloating over community's rightful place as yardstick against which all of LJ is measured. Realization that I've just gotten way, way too into efw. Return to reality.

Some trolling with porn happened. The dickspam I saw within a couple hours of it being posted and deleted. I left the interruption posts featuring bees to show that something had indeed happened and been removed. The videos that were appearing and disappearing were missed completely by us. In both cases, people filed their own abuse thingees, but it didn't seem to cause any action from LJ. We gritted our teeth and prepared ourselves for the legion of "Where are the MODS?!?!?!?!1" comments, but it seemed to blow over quickly enough. We've been hand-approving, but it's a lot of stinking work, and still an imperfect system...so these things are going to happen on occasion. At some point, we might ask for someone to help us with it, but we're not there yet. When the time comes, we probably won't ask for volunteers, but will nominate someone(s) privately based on their community career. We're working hard at staying classy, San Diego.

Some banning had to happen as well. It wasn't a flagrant abuse of power on my part this time (for the record, the last bans I made - and if you don't remember, I'm not reminding you - were based totally and completely on my level of irritation and not rule breaking and I reinstated the parties a couple days later when I calmed down), but an actual rule-break banning for comment deletion. We don't care if you say "I keep forgetting I can't delete comments here" after you delete something. If you're the type of person who makes obnoxious statements and then instantly deletes your comment so no one can call you out on how obnoxious you're being, we don't want you in our community. Comment deleters are the worst. Automatic ban; no warning.

And finally, a very special LULZ to someone who will remain nameless who publicly flounced her way out of stupid_free a month or so ago by commenting in other communities how she had "left s_f in disgust" over our lack of respect for a certain form of food packaging...or something, only to reapply for membership now! HAHA, it's hilarious when someone decides we're awful, terrible meanies only to realize that once you leave, you have no fun!

Just because you read a community post, please stop thinking that it is your personal job to right the wrongs of other people's personal lives. Short of preventing child abuse, domestic violence, or murder (and I mean REAL child abuse, not a refusal to vaccinate or breastfeed, for chrissakes), stay the fuck out of people's personal lives.

Let's talk moderating

First of all, everything we have to say about trolls/spam posts is right there in the FAQ, fully addressed and complete.

Many people have suggested moderated membership.

I moderated membership for awhile after the last huge porn photo attack, and guess what? It makes no difference.

1. We get 50-60 requests per day.

2. Who exactly do I moderate OUT?

Here's Lord Snot, your friendly stupid_free co-mod, moderating membership. I have to click on every profile and analyze it. Here are some requests:

A brand new journal. Deny for being a potential troll? Maybe it's just someone new to LJ.
A journal that has no friends and is only in communities. Deny? Maybe it's just the community account of someone perfectly reasonable. Lots of people have community-only journals because they're not interested in exposing their personal journals to the great unwashed of communities, especially the communities that sometimes get heated (like...stupid_free, mayhaps?).
A journal with a few friends that was created in 2004. Accept as safe? What if it's a stealth sock account that is only used once in awhile to troll?
A journal I know has been banned from other communities. Deny? I've been banned from communities. Sometimes it just happens, doesn't mean you're a troll.
A journal with sparkly graphics. Deny on general principle?
A normal-looking journal like ladyghost316. What reason would I have to deny it? But she spammed the shit out of us.
A journal that looks normal but is a known trouble-maker. But maybe I don't know that. I can't possibly know every bad experience that has ever happened in every community.
A journal like mrflagg. I find him to be a total ass. Deny? But he's a harmless ass.

Are you seeing the flaws in this proposed system? I can't even count the number of times I was called a troll and denied membership or banned from communities when I first set up this account. Why? Because I don't update a lot, I called people out for being stupid, I was only in communities and didn't have friends. A year and a half later, I'm a well-known moderator of a popular community. But I still call people out for being stupid. I still don't update a lot. I still use my journal primarily for communities. I'm no more or less a troll now than I was then. But if I was moderating membership, I'd probably have had to deny lord_snot membership to my community based on the criteria of moderating membership.

Moderating membership = FAIL.

I'm not even going to talk about moderating posts because that's just retarded and would go leaps and bounds towards the total destruction of stupid_free. It would also mean that we would have to be sitting here non-stop approving posts or the community would become stale. And can't people still edit their posts after they've been approved?

Moderating posts = FAIL.

More mods? We take banning very seriously. With more mods, we'd eventually have a situation where some mods thought someone needed to be banned but others didn't. How do we preserve the integrity of the community if we add more moderators? How can we assure that someone's views will sync up exactly with ours? sayonara_snot and I had to have a discussion about some of the people we have banned because they were borderline decisions. More mods would mean more discussions and more work.

So where does that leave us? Probably exactly where we are right now.
